The plant kingdom is characterized by an extraordinary variety of species: it is estimated that there are about 422,000 plant species on Earth. This enormous biodiversity represents a fundamental resource for the planet and for humanity, offering countless opportunities for study and application.
Of all the catalogued plant species, it is estimated that about 72,000 are used by humans mainly for health-related purposes. However, most of these plants have not yet been thoroughly analysed from a scientific point of view. Only a small fraction has received systematic attention from the scientific community, leaving room for future discoveries and applications.
